Privacy policy

OpenCapture is a browser extension for Chrome and Firefox that captures, crops, annotates, and exports screenshots. This page describes exactly what data it collects, what it never collects, and why — matching what the extension's own source code actually does, since OpenCapture is open source and anyone can verify this directly.

What OpenCapture never collects

• The content of any page you capture — screenshots are rendered and stored locally, never uploaded.
• Your browsing history, the URLs you visit, or which sites you use the extension on.
• Analytics, telemetry, crash reports, or usage tracking of any kind.
• Keystrokes, form data, passwords, or anything you type into a page.
• Advertising identifiers. OpenCapture shows no ads and contains no ad-tracking code.

What's stored locally, on your device only

These are stored using your browser's own extension storage (chrome.storage / IndexedDB) and are never transmitted anywhere:

• Your capture history — up to your last 50 screenshots, so you can reopen them. Deletable any time from the History page, individually or all at once.
• Save preferences — your chosen filename and save folder.
• The rating-prompt state — whether you've been asked to rate the extension, so it doesn't ask more than twice.

Uninstalling the extension removes all of this along with it.

Data used only if you sign in (optional)

Every core feature — full-page, visible-area, and selected-area capture, cropping, annotation, blur/blur, and PNG/PDF export — works with no account and no sign-in. Signing in is needed for exactly one thing: unlocking the paid, one-time Supporter watermark feature.

If you choose to sign in, OpenCapture uses one of the following methods, each handled by its own provider, not by OpenCapture:

• Google sign-in — Google authenticates you and shares your email address with our account server to identify your account.
• Crypto wallet (SIWE) — your wallet signs a login message; your public wallet address identifies your account.
• Nostr — your Nostr public key identifies your account.

Once signed in, the extension stores a session token locally (via chrome.storage) so you stay signed in, and uses it to check your credit balance and unlock the Supporter feature by talking to our own account server and gateway. No page content or screenshot is ever included in these requests.

Payments

If you buy credits for the Supporter unlock, payment is handled entirely by our payment processor (card payments via Stripe, or directly on-chain for crypto/Lightning) on our account server's own pages — never inside the extension. OpenCapture never sees or stores your card number, wallet seed phrase, or private keys.

Permissions the extension requests, and why

• activeTab — to capture the tab you're actively viewing when you click a capture button.
• scripting — to inject a short-lived script into the active tab, only when you start a capture, to prepare the page and draw the selection overlay.
• downloads — to save your finished screenshot to your Downloads folder.
• storage — for the local preferences and history described above.
• Optional host access to our own account server — declared as optional_host_permissions, which means it is not granted when you install the extension. It is requested only if you choose to sign in for the Supporter unlock, and you approve it at that moment. If you never sign in, the extension never holds it.

Third parties

OpenCapture does not sell, rent, or share your data with third parties for advertising or any other purpose. The only outside services involved are the sign-in providers you explicitly choose (Google, a wallet, or Nostr) and, if you buy credits, our payment processor — each only for the specific action you take.

Data deletion

Local data (history, preferences) can be cleared at any time from the extension's History page, or removed entirely by uninstalling the extension. To delete your account and any associated sign-in data from our servers, contact us at the email below.

Children's privacy

OpenCapture is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect data from them.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the date at the top of this page will be updated. Material changes will also be reflected in the extension's own store listing.
